How You Can Help the Coalition

 Donate

We’ve just heard that Parliament will be prorogued.  I haven’t heard what the conditions are yet, but we can expect a long and nasty propaganda campaign by the CPC war room now.

I urge everyone who is behind this coalition to get out their chequebooks and give whatever they can afford, whether it is $10.00, $100.00, or $100,000 dollars, to either the Liberals or the NDP to counter what I am sure is going to be a long and nasty campaign fueled by oil and other corporate interests who want to keep the “hands-off” Harper government in power.

This is your Canada.  Keep it that way with your donation.

As an aside I am not being paid to write this blog.  I am an NDP party member and have not been advised to write this nor have I consulted with them in any way.  I simply paid my money before the election and got a membership card.  I am a concerned citizen who is appalled at the behaviour and policies of the Harper Conservatives and wants to support the coalition.

Remember that you receive a substantial tax credit on your tax return for donating to either party.  Details on this are available on each party’s donation page.

Start a blog to write down your thoughts on the whole affair.  Post links to your blog on politically related websites and other sources.  Send links to your MP.  For those less web inclined, head on over to blogger.com to get started with no charge and no mess.

Rally

There are several rallies planned for this weekend.  Head on over to http://www.62percentmajority.ca for plans and sign the petition and attend a rally in your city.  If you live in Ottawa, camp out on the Hill to protest Harper’s unwillingness to face Parliament.

My Letter to the Governor General Regarding the Coalition

gg.jpgDear Right Honourable Mme. Jean:

Prior to this election, I dug into the background of my local incumbent Conservative MP, David Sweet. Mr. Sweet is the former head of a pro-life extreme right wing think tank and also a former head of the Promise Keepers Canada, two organizations that he actively tries to hide in his political history on his website. I am highly discouraged that such a man is actually representative of me in Parliament.

I believe that Mr. Sweet’s beliefs about women and abortion can only be reflected by others in his party, including Mr. Harper, who knows about the background of all of his members of Parliament. This is becoming increasingly evident in Mr. Harper’s reactionary attitude to the recent developments in our Parliament, where he seems to have forgotten that he is the leader of a Minority government.

Despite the futility of doing so in my riding, I voted NDP as I believe that they stand up for the rights of Canadians - all Canadians. Men, women, poor, rich and otherwise. I also joined the NDP party as a member and helped the local candidate with his Facebook group and a very short bit of canvassing from his offices.

As part of the majority that voted against Mr. Harper, I urge you to let the coalition government go ahead with their plan as soon as possible to get our economy - and Canada - back on track. The coalition will put an end to partisan politics and pull together for the good of the country. I believe that the coalition’s House would be a far more democratic representation of the will of Canadians after the coalition government is in place than it is right now. I don’t mind saying that as a woman and an avid pro-choice supporter, I am completely against this incumbent party that has eagerly accepted at least one pro-life and anti-woman MP into their ranks. The scrapping of the pay equity laws is just the beginning, in my view.

The Conservative government refuses to accept the view of a united Canada as a place of unity for Quebecers, immigrants, women, and members of disparate communities. They are in fact trying to incite hate by running a campaign against the “separatists” in Parliament in order to hold on to power. I hope that you, as a woman and and as a representative of Her Royal Majesty, help Canada to see the reason in a coalition government and take an active role in selling this as the best solution to the Canadian people.

I thank you for reading my e-mail and wish you the best of luck in dealing with what is surely one of the heaviest burdens in our Constitutional history.

Send a Rose To Support Our Coalition

rose.jpgThe premise is very simple.  The Liberals, NDP and Bloc PQ are going to need a lot of confidence in the next week or so in order to do the very tough things that they will have to do to remove Harper’s Conservatives from power.  I propose that we each send our party leader of choice a single red rose, in the spirit of the last prime minister that truly stood up for Canadians, in order to help rekindle any fading hope that the boys on the Hill may have in the next few weeks.  Attach a small note of encouragement to the rose, such as “Go Get Em!”, “Vas y, Vas y!”, “Yes you can!”, or “We’re Behind You!”.  I wouldn’t send a longer note since hopefully, they will be very busy.

While it would be nice to send them to individual MP’s, I believe they will have more of an impact if sent to your party leader of choice.  Here are their addresses:
